We've been seeing similar issues in our 2.12.1-ish environment. I just caught an instance similar to what Michele reports: a search that times out after a minute or so, showing no hits; repeating the search returns in a reasonable amount of time with 15 hits.
Logs show the "flushing data from socket..." message followed by a 67-second gap before one final message for that log trace:

Unfortunately I can't get the query duration from our Postgres logs. I'll tweak our setup so I can report that next time.
