It did use the labels as keys, yes. Fortunately a conversion from the old style to the new (uses field names, all stat cats in a sub-hash) is fairly straightforward and has already been written and lightly tested. :) Given recent OpenSRF chunking changes and that the web client is the way forward (and I plan to do a one-time conversion from xul style to web as part of this if I can get it done) any issues with the xul client shouldn't matter anymore.
