heh - i'm not going to redesign and rewrite *that*, Mike: it's so integral it would probably be quicker to just start again from (near-)scratch. it's not ideal, but it seems to work for everything outside of the pathological cases i spotted, so i think i'll stick to lower-hanging fruit instead. :P
