I think this is not so hard to do if we keep the internal structure as it is, and translate from/to the form described by Bulia when reading/writing. While it's less than ideal to have the internal structure different from the written form, this is still much better than the current situation (and in the long run we will almost certainly need to change to 'textArea' once the SVG 1.2 spec is finalized, so anything we do now is just a temporary fix anyway).
