It's a while i'm trying to setup a vnc server to control my pc with a vnc app called hipporemote that actually works in ubuntu 12.04 simply setting up desktop sharing, i've followed many guide, some of them suggest to install gnome-core to accomplish it.. i've tried installing it (it takes almost all the unity desktop within), after that if i login using ubuntu/unity from lightdm i'm able to control the desktop from the hipporemote if i login in panthen not.
