Bug Description

- version is 3.1 Alpha 1
- using Ubuntu 6.10

When "Permission required to install packages" window opens, if it list a lot of packages then the password entry textbox, "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons will be drawn below desktop border.

Window is not vertically resizable and does not have a scroll bar.

User may not be aware he can still progress by entering password and pressing Enter, because he is not sure what input is required from him.

Please make window resizable and add scroll bars.

I can confim this.

HOWEVER, this goes beyond just not seeing the password textbos. The 'OK' and 'Cancel' buttons are pushed offscreen making the program extremely user unfriendly. In the spirit of 'EasyUbuntu' user friendliness is extremely important.

I have experience this bug on four systems so far - all Ubuntu 6.10

Very unfriendly.

The problem is not just if you select a lot of packages.

The program displays a full list of all packages that it has installed, plus packages to be installed. So if you try to install things one at a time, you're still stuffed.

This should be considered of critical importance, as I can't recommend Easy Ubuntu to a non-tech user with this issue present. I have to talk them through it or do it myself.

Emin, Paul, Tim, and Ben,

I personally usually install Kubuntu, so my installations use the qt files. I have run into this problem when installing (X)(Flux)ubuntu, however.

1) When I run easyubuntu as root, I don't get the problem. Do you get the same result if you run easyubuntu from a terminal:
    # sudo -s
[Type your password when prompted]
    # easyubuntu

2) If any of you are technical users (Ben?), attached is the gtkpermission.py file, which is the script that controls the dialog box (if you are running Ubuntu or Xubuntu). Take a look and suggest changes. I can't read or write Python well, but it looks like the routine uses a standard dialog box. Perhaps you can suggest some changes and post for all to see?

I've no experience with GTK or Python, but I think the problem is simply that the window is too big, and that it can easily be solved by making the display of installed / to-be-installed apps a scrolling list of a sane, fixed height (e.g., six rows).

I checked off maybe 10 things to install, let EasyUbuntu do its magic, and got presented with the too-tall window. Happens on my crummy 1024x768 display but not at 1400x1050 on my other machine.

Quite frankly, though, having just checked off what I wanted installed, I didn't even take the time to read the list, so I wonder if it would make sense to 'hide' it: "Press 'Details...' to see a list of all packages" or something.
