My original backup was done with Deja Dup, the front end to duplicity, restoring the same backup. I needed this one specifically, because after that date, the files I needed were removed from the client drive. In fact, it's the only backup that has the files I needed. One difference is that I specified a particular directory to be restored in Deja Dup, and that only restored a third of the directory I wanted. When I ran duplicity directly I decided not to specify a directory, and it got through most of the backup. If I don't have --force, it does crash with the error I report in the title of my bug report, but it was right near the end of the entire backup this time.
