Bug Description
A few days ago, I noticed a new version of Drawers through the Ubuntu update. Now I added a new icon to one of my drawers - and after opening it the next time, most icons were gone! Even worse: I just open ... close ... open ... close ... a drawer (without selecting any icon in the drawer), and everytime (!) it shows more or less icons!!!

Hi guys,
Sorry for being so slow in responding and troubleshooting. I just started a new job and am traveling a lot. I'll try and work on it this weekend. Can either of you post the contents of the .desktop file for your drawer (you can easily get by opening the preferences and clicking the pencil icon)? Does this only happen with drawers that you recently added things to? Are items in the drawer applications or links to files?
I don't have my development laptop on me, but I wasn't able to reproduce it a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to do a fresh install on this laptop in a virtualbox, so maybe I'll get some clues.
Best,
Ian

Items, applications links? I have no idea - I just drag & drop icons from the Unity laucher to a Drawer - that's the main reason of Drawers to exist, isn't it? I just know that this bug started to occur just a short while ago - so one Drawers update introduced this bug.

Any news on thus bug? I just installed Drawers (Ubuntu 13.04) and i have the same problem, icons vanish!
icb410 (ian-berke) wrote : | #7 |
Can anyone post the contents of one of their drawer file for which this occurring? Just open drawer preferences and click the pencil icon to get the contents. Copy and paste.
Also run the drawer from the command line and post the contents. Do so like this:
/opt/extras.
Just replace NAMEOFYOURDRAWER with the correct name.
I can't reproduce this and it may be specific to certain setups.

Does this behavior happen with a brand new drawer? The desktop file seems
to contain all the entries for things you've dragged to it (the Actions key
in [Desktop Entry]) but Action groups are missing for all of them except
gparted. I would try a brand new drawer and test adding files one at a
time. Run the drawer from the command line so you can see the debug info as
you add the files. Post here.

Yes, I created a new drawer, added 2 icons. So far, so good, but when I go into setup of this drawer and change icon size (2 times), suddenly the drawer is empty!
I don't know how to "run " a drawer form command line.

Does it always have trouble when items with non-english letters are in the
drawers (e.g. Passwörter und Verschlüsselung)?

Some of the modules I've been using to parse .desktop files don't play nice
with nonstandard letters. Although I've tried hard to make it work, random
bugs always seem to creep in. Since I'm only an English speaker, I don't
get exposed to these very frequently. Now that I have some idea what's
going on I can try to reproduce and fix on my machine.
Best,
Ian

If it helps anybody, try changing the icon theme i noticed an error a while ago in drawers saying,
"gi._glib.GError: Icon 'back' not present in theme"
changing my theme made all my icons appear again

Hi Ian,
I don't know whether this is related to previous instances of icons vanishing, but ...
I've been running Drawers on up to date versions of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS for the past 2 years, without trouble.
Context:
kernel: 3.16.0-50-generic
desktop: Unity 7.2.6+14.
drawers: 14.05-0~
Booting up 2 days ago, all launch-bar drawers icons had disappeared (not the drawers themselves but their icons).
Elements inside are present with their proper icons and are normally responsive.
In fact everything is normal except for the fact that the icons of each drawer pinned to the launch bar are now generic grey blobs.
I tried:
$ sudo apt -get update; sudo apt-get install --reinstall drawers
$ sudo apt-get install -f drawers
to no avail. It is as if the icon had been simply wiped out. How can I fix that ?
Cedric Bhihe (cedric-bhihe) wrote : | #17 |
Problem solved.
A recovery from a backup on my Lx box left a few directories with spurious access permissions.
Apparently that created an issue with Drawers. Everything is now back to normal.
Please ignore the above Post #16.
Cheers.
Sorry about the delay getting to you. Can you provide more info about the behavior? What version of drawers do you have installed? Is it 13.5.1- 0~163~raring1? You can get this by running from the command line: apt-cache policy drawers
Please also run drawers in debug mode from the command line by doing the following:
/opt/extras. ubuntu. com/drawers/ bin/drawers -d -f ~/.local/ share/applicati ons/NAMEOFDRAWE R.desktop
Just replace the name of your drawer. This is for a basic drawer which it sounds like you're using.
Please post the output from the terminal after you add some files to the drawer.
Best,
Ian
