Since there's been no movement on this for months, I thought I'd move the pictures to another network disk (I need to access them from more than one machine). So i bought a WD NetCenter disk and mounted it using CIFS. Unfortunately, the result is the same. Does this mean digikam can only be used with pictures stored on a local disk?

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=121005 indicates that the digikam developers do not want to do anything about the situation :-(
