Relevant citation is http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3442#page-4, "Local subnet routes" -- this behaviour should work and this script currently does not correctly implement RFC 3442.

The Debian bug -- http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=521024 -- has a slightly neater patch (which is now applied to Debian).
