Bug Description

For the second time now the XPS 13 instead of suspending ended up in a state where it is still running but the screen is just black and it cannot be turned off. The only way to get it back into a usable state is to wait until the battery has run out and then boot it again.

Is there an emergency switch feature that can be used to force the system off?

Hello.

I got the same issue recovering from suspend. I got a black screen probably related to this bug [1] (it was attached to an external monitor) and after that can not force shutdown the laptop even pressing x seconds the turn off button.

I need to wait until the battery is drained.

Huh... strange. I get a similar issue sometimes (black screen after I resume, but I can move my mouse around), but I can always just hold the power button down. In my mind, that should always work! Very strange indeed.

Would like to report the same issue here on my Dell XPS, Bios A09. I have intel rapid start enabled, but intel smart connect is disabled.

For me, this seems to happen after waking from sleep, or I notice the device is awake on its own when it should be in sleep (Guessing thats related to this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell-sputnik/+bug/1161962)

There is no specific way to replicate this, as I have gone months without an issue, to today where I had it happen TWICE so I took the bottom panel off to unplug the battery (which sucks).

Hello,
I had also this issue randomly a dozen times since I bought the laptop in august. I had to buy the specific screwdriver to open the back and unplug the battery, if I want to avoid 3 long hours of non productiviy.

I spent a lot of time with the Dell support, because for me this is a hardware issue; they changed motherboard+battery last week, and it happened again today. I still have the shipped ubuntu 12.04 version, but with newer kernel (3.8). The bios version has been automatically updated when changing the motherboard (A10), and still the same.

The support advised to try to update the system. Waiting for Trusty Tahr, will see what is says. I don't know if this issue happens also on Windows.

Unfortunatelly I had the same issue today on Trusty Tahr so upgrading system does not help.
