@Batuhan: I tested your workaround script and it works fine for me, thanks a lot! (HD XPS13 "Sputnik", Kubuntu 13.04, kernel 3.8.0-25-generic, BIOS A07)
Installing the ubuntu-desktop package, I also found that the onscreen display not being displayed when changing brightness seems to be a KDE bug, at least the OSD is working in an ubuntu session.
slightly off-topic: could someone please point me to a website explaining how to upgrade the BIOS within ubuntu. Are there relevant differences between A07 and A08?
