Ubuntu 13.04 clean install on XPS 13 Developer Edition (Sputnik)
Up to date packages which includes kernel 3.8.0-25-generic
brightness not working as well documented above...
ran:
sudo bash -c '/bin/echo 0 > /sys/class/
it now works. keyboard controls, on-screen display, and the brightness actually changes.
