Bug Description

Hi there,

I have just tried to config a VPN in my laptop but I couldn't do that because the "Add" button (to add a new VPN connection) is disabled.

I have the next packages installed:

 * network-manager:
    - Architecture: lpia
    - Version: 0.6.6-0ubuntu5

* network-manager-openvpn:
   - Architecture: lpia
   - Version: 0.3.2svn2342-1ubuntu4

$ lsb_release -a
   Distributor ID: Ubuntu
   Description: Ubuntu 8.04.2
   Release: 8.04
   Codename: hardy

$ uname -a
   Linux myhost 2.6.24-24-lpia #1 SMP Wed May 6 17:43:36 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Anyone can help me?

Yep, I gues it could be a duplicated. I just realized because I did `dpkg -l package` instead of viewing the cache by `apt-cache show package`. My versions are:

$ dpkg -l network-manager
   Version 0.7~~svn20081018t105859+m

$ dpkg -l network-manager-openvpn
   Version 0.3.2svn2342-1ubuntu4

$ dpkg -l network-manager-vpnc
   Version 0.6.4svn2422-0ubuntu5

Anyway, my problem is related to network-manager-openvpn plugin instead of network-manager-pvpn. I don't know if there is any relation between both, but I guess my problem is different.

So, AFAIK I guess this bug is not a duplicated.

Could you please post a new bug only for OpenVPN? This bug consists of two separate issues (vpnc and OpenVPN).
Thanks!

Sorry but I don't understand how this bug is related to network-manager-vpnc package as I am reporting my issues with network-manager and network-manager-openvpn packages. Could you explain me how vpnc affects to this bug?

Sorry, I might misread your note, as you were mentioning that network-manager-vpnc was actually fixing partially the problem for you. In any case I remove the duplicate, and made instead the bug I just filed a duplicate of yours (so that yours is the outstanding bug).

I recompiled Network-manager-openvpn straight from intrepid source (v.0.7) and it should work (please test) I didn't make any diff, since the source is untouched from intrepid.

First at all, Feranick, thanks for the backport :) Anyway, it keeps no working :-/

Although the "Add button" is clickable right now thanks to network-manager-openvpn plugin backported from intrepid, the problem seems to be related to an older version of openvpn which doesn't work with network manager, as it's said here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-openvpn/+bug/260291

JFYI, my current versions are:

$ dpkg -l openvpn
   Version 2.1~rc7-1ubuntu3.3

$ dpkg -l network-manager
   Version 0.7~~svn20081018t105859+m

I tried to backport openvpn from intrepid. Things are however not either simple or just a matter of a recompile from intrepid. The latest version of openvpn in intrepid depends on a newer version of openssl also from intrepid. So if we go by a recompile, then, lots of packages need to be recompiled (including some low level ones, like openssl).

Canonical must decide if this strategy of mixing packages from intrepid and hardy should go to the full extent. Obviously this cherry picking has some serious consequences, as this and many other bugs show), that so far haven't been addressed properly.

If openvpn is really needed, there is a complete PPA with backports from intrepid to hardy of network-manager and related packages (including openvpn). Some of the packages offered are older versions of those in current intrepid, so they might be affected by vulnerabilities.
