In the latest Gutsy kernel images (looking at 2.6.22-13 here) vesafb is no longer compiled into the kernel image as it was when this bug was first reported. This is the reason the previous work-around no longer works.
As MOM has reported, it is now necessary to remove the vesafb module blacklist, and then have vesafb and fbcon loaded. Use module options to set resolution.
