Hallo,

I tried the workaround for this bug too, but always ended with a console screen containing some spread green squares, partly blinking.
I have an older Toshiba notebook with a NVidia GeForce4 620Go. Because I need the Xinerama function (for beamer presentations), I use the restricted nvidia driver. I never got a working high resolution framebuffer console (with vesafb -- I know that only this works with the nvidia drivers) since I upgraded from Feisty (where everything worked fine) to Gutsy (which is IMHO on older hardware _very_ slow, even when I disable most of the eyecandy).
I was just one step before switching back to Debian (that I used before Feisty) the necessary backup was already done. Then I found, that the framebuffer console came back, when I disabled the Ubuntu splash screen.
So the combination of the splash screen with the restricted nvidia driver (#9636, not the "new" one) seems to break the vesafb framebuffer.

Thomas.
