For gtk+3.0 to depend on wayland in the Ubuntu repos would require that none of the proprietary drivers force the removal of wayland. I suppose this could be done in such a way that wayland would be installed but broken with the proprietary drivers installed, assuming the session and all programs fall back to X without any issues.

This concern goes out the window if either both Nvidia and AMD start supporting Wayland in their prop drivers, or (my preferred scenario) the open source drivers catch up. Radeon is closing fast on Catalyst, Nvidia's lesser cooperation compared to AMD has meant the nouveau team has to fight tooth and nail to get performance. I'd love to see Wayland force both AMD and Nvidia to throw up their hands and release all the non-"digital rights management" related commands and algorithms for their hardware so they would no longer have to write proprietary Linux drivers at all.
