I've tested the command below both with an unpatched and a patch Debian 6.9.7 kernel. The test hung as expected with the unpatched kernel, and succeeded with the patched kernel.

There was one gotcha here: I didn't bump my kernel version upon rebuild, so when the test started, the original kernel was installed again (as an upgrade), the VM rebooted, and the test hung again. I sidestepped this by reinstalling the rebuilt kernel, and setting the hold flag.

In the test log you most recently attached, the kernel version is Ubuntu 6.8.0-36.36-generic with build date June 10, so I don't think this is your rebuilt kernel?

Side note, Ubuntu kernel's source package format is 1.0, not 3.0 (quilt), so that's why your patch was ignored in your previous build. See dpkg-source(1).
