I was using Tim Gardner's patched kernel successfully. Of course, there's been a kernel update recently (two of them, actually) and therefore Tim's kernel has been replaced with a standard Ubuntu version - with the error in it.
For the moment, I've gone back to using a mainline kernel: 2.6.35-020635rc1-generic, which doesn't have this error.
However, if the fix isn't going to be released for lucid any time soon, how would be go about compiling either a whole kernel (gulp!) or just the r8169 driver so that we can get the functionality in the standard Ubuntu kernel?
