From what I can tell, not specifying a umask parameter is the same as umask=0,
so discs like the one I tried will still have problems. It is also conceivable
that some weird DVDs would have no permission bits set at all. It is weird that
the different discs have different weird permissions though -- I'd have expected
there to be one or two pieces of broken DVD mastering software that produced
identical broken permissions.

As far as removing the fstab entry for the drive, the two changes I observed
were that the drive got mounted as /media/hda rather than /media/cdrom0, and
Totem complained that it couldn't find the mount point associated with /dev/hda
in the fstab file.
