Bug Description

The problem is as shown on the attached screenshot of the Xchat that if the window is NOT maximized we are actually unable to change its size! As we can see on the screenshot the lower right corner of a window that allows us to change its size is out of the screen. This case is espacially annoying in Unity where we are not provided with the lower panel where we could see all of the open windows all the time and switch between them with a single click of a mouse button. I'd love to be able to see all of the open windows all the time. Not all of us work on netbooks and our screens are usually big enough to handle one more panel or launchbar that doesn't escape my view (hide) and doesn't let me wait to occur if it occurs at all cause there are often problems even with that.
I'm describing the problem of no panel with this bug cause it causes a lot of trouble espacially while working with graphics where we often have to FAST and OFTEN switch between several windows, big windows but not maximized. Switching between windows in Unity is a way full of pain. The fastest way is ALT+TAB but if there are 4, 6 or 11 windows open, alt+tab is not the fastest method either. The Unity programmers didn't think about it at all. I'd love to either have my lower GNOME (actually MS Windows - it exists since Win95 and nobody took it us away for 17years! The autohide function isn't default as in Unity!!!) panel back or have the possibility of seeing the launchbar all the time! I certainly do NOT want it to hide and I think milions of people who work with more than 3 windows at a time would like to see it as well!

What's more we are not only unable to change the size. Often we do not see the buttons untill we maximize a window. Unity force us to work with miximized windows. Should I now also maximize narrow Skype window to see its bottom!? Skype is not the best example here perhaps but there are hundreds of programs that do not have to be maximized and now at Unity they have to be.

This time from Unity. First off all I'd love to see the lower part of both GIMP panels as well!!! There is no way to use all the functions that are below the the screen or actually out of it!!! In GNOME we had a lower panel on which every window stopped and didn't fell out of the screen.

Second thing is the "wonderful" Unity window Menu bar integration (which sucks as well especially while working with several windows). Some "wise" people didn't take into account that some Menus as in FOR EXAMPLE GIMP are pretty long! And may not suit the upper panel- the panel may be to short for the menu as in the attached screenshot.

Unity made Ubuntu useless. You not only spoiled Ubuntu itself releasing a not working Alpha version but also crashed Classic GNOME which inherited Unity's bugs which make system useless.

Could anyone please tell me how am I expected to work with GIMP on Unity if I don't see the whole menu(red arrows)?!!! Part of a menu is covered by clock, network manager and bluetooth manager?
Second question: why every time I want to close a window I have to wonder whether it is maximed and I should close it on the left side or it isn't maximized and then I have to close it on the (according to me correct) right side. I've been using computer now for 17 Years and closing windows on the left seemed to me the same as moving from Poland to UK and driving a car on the left side of a road. In Unity not only some of the windows are closed on the left but we have to wonder where to find a button. In Unity one have to wonder about everything. It is the less intuitive environment I've ever seen and would't recommend it to any novice user.

ps
since an hour I'm trying to prevent the Launchbar from escaping from my screen. I read it is possible but have no idea how. I'm not a novice user. I'm not asking You how to do it. I'm asking if according to You shouldn't it be easier? Why when I click the Launchbar with a right mouse button there is no option "always visible" or "always on top"? Unity makes me tired...

Are you not able to make a non-maximized window smaller by dragging the window's top border downward?

To do this, hover the mouse over the top edge of the window (the mouse pointer will change to something like the pointer shown in the attached screenshot), then click and hold, and drag the mouse pointer down. Then, after releasing your hold on the mouse button, you can subsequently drag the window up, and you can see the whole contents. This is the standard way to resize a vertically too-large window in almost any desktop environment. If this always works in Unity, then it seems that this is not really a bug. If this works but you believe this is still a bug, please explain.

That integrates with upper panel in a way that we are unable to see all the menu options?
Should I report it as another bug or does anyone have also a solution for that thing?

OK, being the person who maintains this part of the stack, I'm going
to try and see what's going on here, because I see a number of factors
at play. So I have some questions to ask :)

1. First of all, is the problem you're describing that windows are
being created at a larger size than your screen size, and thus you
can't interact with the bottom of the window because it isn't
on-screen
2. Can you resize said windows to a *smaller* size at all (eg, by
using the resizable grip area on the top of the window)

Also, let me know the applications and the screen resolutions for
which this is a problem. I've got a lot of tasks on my list right now
but I'll try to get to this one within the next week.

I'm affraid it doesn't always work. I can resize this way the "toolbox" window in GIMP but doing the same with layer window is impossible.

@Sam

1. Not only the windows are created larger than the screen. A big problem is also menu bar integration, for which often the upper panel is to short. Because of that clock etc. covers some menu elements that we are unable to use. Someone didn't take into account that there are programs with longer menu than the one from Firefox or Nautilus.

I heard that Unity was designed for netbooks and the problems described above make using my 10,1inch mashine impossible. The screen resolution is 1024:600 (16:9).

2. Now I noticed that I can resize a window clicking right mouse button on its title bar and choosing a resize option. the computer however changes the window size either only horizontally or only vertically. Which way the window will be resized depends on the first move made after clicking "change size" option. if the mouse is moved horizontally there is no possibility of changing the size vertically. That's why after two months I finally managed to see GIMP fully on the screen. We may close the bug here and now but You should think about other users who just wont be able to work with Unity because it's use is very unintuitive. Resizing the layer window in GIMP "using the resizable grip area on the top of the window" is impossible.

The problem of menu integration stays however open and unsolved.

Thanks,

Can you clarify what you mean here by "Resizing the layer window in
GIMP "using the resizable grip
> area on the top of the window" is impossible.". Are you not able to re-size it at all (eg, by using the re-size option in the window menu, or the grip or anything).

If you *are* able to resize it, its a bug in the window placement
algorithm compiz uses and I need to fix that (though I need to fix
that "offset" too I think as well).

That's not something that I can fix. I think there's a separate bug
for this though.

I can resize the layer window horizontally but not vertically. but I played with that a bit and that may be caused by my screen that is just not high enough and the options cannot be "squeezed" any more. So I think we may treat the bug report as solved. Sorry for doing a mess but Unity is the less intuitive environment I've ever seen.

A window and all its borders should be displayed in 100% on a user's screen without "otherwise" resizeability. In Windows95 17 years ago there were no such problems! Where is the progress? Some users as my mother do not know that one can change a size of a window. In some cases changing a size is very annoying or a hard task even for an advanced user. Sometimes windows after resizing are useless anyway. A window shouldn't be divided into viewports anyway. What is the sense of it?

This seems to still be an issue. For instance, when I launch the System Settings dialog on my laptop (1360x768), the window extends below the bottom of my screen such that I can't see the "Users" icon. This window, as far as I can tell, is not resizable or maximizable, and no scroll bar is created, so I can't scroll down to that setting applet. Of course, since Unity thinks the whole window is being displayed, it doesn't think scroll bars are necessary. This is why no window should ever be launched larger than can be displayed on the user's screen resolution. I'm using 13.04 with all updates. I can grab a screen shot if anyone needs it once I get home.
