I tried everything in your post. I guess my problem is not amongst the ones you've solved. :(

Should I switch to nouveau? The nvidia drivers worked quite well up until Oneiric. Gnome-shell does work, but it has its own issues (crashing randomly when switching workspaces).

(Windows dragged do not redraw during drag action unless you drag very slowly.)
