I'm getting optimistic :-)
I've plugged my Logitech USB mouse in via a PS2 interface and rebooted. That's more than an hour ago now, and I've not experienced the problem yet! It normally appears after 15-30 minutes. Problem solved?!
However, glxgears is still not working: no glxgears and no output into bash and not possible to switch focus to another window ... but I can ctrl-c and kill glxgears after which glxgear output is listed in bash (framerate supposedly 15.000+) and I get desktop control back :-)
