As i wrote above, the Ram compression technology is just only being incorporated into 8.10 (intrepid) wich is due in october.
There is no guarantee that it wont corrupt data or run stable yet and only user testing in the ubuntu development release will tell.
If it proves to be stable and safe i will try to backport it into 8.04 but that is unlikely to happen for the current image unless we would delay it (which is not wanted as i understand)
Feature development in 8.10 happens until end of august as can be seen on the development schedule at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseSchedule, the following phase after that is supposed to be used for QA and stablization.
