I'm experiencing the same issue on an EC2 (AWS) Ubuntu-14.04 instance.

Although the following kernels are installed:

Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-32-generic
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-30-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-30-generic
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-29-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-29-generic

the system boots with 3.13.0-29 and the menu.lst is not updated.
