Thanks James, in reply to comment #3, the hostname of the container is juju-machine-17-lxc-0, but MAAS DNS has a generated name for that container like aware-jackrabbit.

Maybe container hostnames are not correctly getting set to same name as DNS?

When I was testing to see if I could start rabbitmq, I needed to add RABBITMQ_NODENAM=rabbit@juju-machine-17-lxc-0, before rabbitmq would start.
