When I saw on the audio forum that one person commented that they had been a year without audio on 10.4 and another comment that there were 4 editions of ubuntu and that changing to another edition was a choice, I decided that was good advice, so I downloaded ubuntu 10.10 and installed that as a new installation with HD reformat.
Thus I am not able to do again the questions and answers previously done before I filed the bug report as suggested in the information on fixing no audio problem.
I regret not having enough knowledge to know that you would need the findings I got from doing the routine outlined in https://wiki.ubuntu.
Thank you for your response asking for more info.
I followed the instructions outlined in https:/ /wiki.ubuntu.

Good news: My audio now works under 10.10
