Bug Description

over the last few years I have moved many EPUB formated books into Calibre and then converted them into mobi format using the Calibre conversion routine.

Recently when I move recently converted books from Calibre to my Kindle I have started receiving a message saying Kindle could not open the book and to try down loading it again.

I sent a copy of one of the Mobi books from my Calibre library that wouldn't open with my Kindle to my brother to check if the problem was in my Kindle.

My brother copied the file into his Calibre and discovered that the file I sent him was a AZW3 file, in spite of the fact that my Calibre library displayed the file as a mobi file.

My brother converted this file from AZW to mobi in his Calbre. moved it to his Kindle and it opened on his Kindle perfectly.

He sent me a copy of the book that he converted with his Calibre conversion routine and I loaded it into my calibre library and moved it to my Kindle and it opened perfectly.

It seems that there a at least two problems when converting EPUB or AZW formats to Mobi using the Calibre conversion function:

1. The conversion from EPUB/AZW to Mobi does not take place.

2. The Calibre library displays the output of the conversion as a Mobi file, even though the conversion did not occur.

I do not know if this is a Calibre bug or a failure of my Calibre (Release 3.15) application to run conversions correctly.

I am running Windows 10 on my PC and Calibre release 3.15

What do you suggest??

Regards,

Bob

All modern kindles can read both MOBI and AZW3. calibre will convert to
whichever you have set as your preferences output format in
Preferences->Behavior. If you want to convert to MOBI and not azw3,
change it there, accordingly.

Dear Kovid,

I know that Kindle can read both AZW and MOBI files. My Kindle has been reading Calibre library books that had been converted to the Mobi format for several years now.

Suddenly this Calibre conversion function has stopped correctly and I can no longer read books converted by Calibre from EPUB or AZW to mobi.

My Calibre conversion preference output format was originally set to, and continues to be set to, MOBI as my preferred output format.

The problem is that Calibre is not correctly performing the conversion from epub to mobi even though the output result is displayed as "MOBI" when it is not!

Is simple terms, Calibre is not preforming the EPUB to MOBI conversion properly incorrectly displays the conversion to have been accomplished.

Please re-read my original submission as it explains this problem in detail.

Simply telling me to set my preferences shows that I haven't adequately explained the problem, to you.

My preferences have always been set correctly to the MOBI output format(for several years now) and the EPUB to MOBI conversion output formats have worked properly in my Kindle (for several years now).

The conversion has suddenly stopped working correctly.

I have made no settings changes from those that have been working correctly for years. Something has changed in my Calibre conversion functionality/application, a change that I did not introduce.

Regards,

Bob

There have been no changes to calibre conversion to MOBI in years as
well, and MOBI files generated by calibre 3.15 continue to work on my Kindle.
So you have changed something, unfortunately, from your description, it
is impossible to say what that thing might be.

I suggest you try the following steps:

1) Add a epub file to calibre
2) Connect your kindle
3) Select the previously added file
4) Click the send to device button
5) If you get a popup asking you if the book should be auto-converted, click yes
6) After the sending is finished (the busy spinner in the bottom right corner stops rotating) disconnect your kindle and try to read the book

Hi everyone,

OK, based on suggestions from several members, I tried several suggestions:

1. I changed the default conversion output preference settings for mobi from "Old" to "Both" and "New". No change corrected the problem.

2. I followed Kovid's suggestion as seen below and the resulting converted book opened in Kindle without problem.

So in sum;

1. If I use the "Convert Books" function located on the Calibre task bar, to convert a EPUB book in my Calibre library to Mobi, the converted book does not open with Kindle.

2. If I load an Epub formatted book from my Caliber library directly to my Kindle, and use the Calibre pop-up window to select the option to autoconvert the book, the resultant mobi file opens successfully in my Kindle.

So one path for conversion does not work and one path does.

I am puzzled as to what to do. I have recently created a fairly large Calibre library (a bit over new 1000 books) and would like to ensure that they can be bulk converted to a format that opens in Kindle.

Regards and thanks,

Both conversion methods use the same code. I suggest you select all book
sin your library, click the edit metadata button choose "Remove stored
conversion settings for selected books" and then click OK.

Then go to Preferences->Output options->MOBI Output and make sure it
says: MOBI file type: old

Now convert any book you like to MOBI and test it on your Kindle.
