Hello and thank you for this bug report! (and sorry for this very very long delay!)

This is strange that this 01firefox.desktop file is removed...
Do you have this bug if you drag and drop the Firefox menu entry from the applications menu?

Hi Mathieu,

No - I do not drag it from the app-menu. I right click and tell cairo to
turn it into a launcher.

The same problem occurs with the shortcuts applet.

It also disappears and there is no pattern. Sometimes it takes a few
days and sometimes it disappears that same day.

I am trying to figure out whether it makes a difference if the laptop is
shutdown with the aforementioned apps (applets) opened.

Up to now I have not been able to find a reason

Cheers

Frank

And if you try to import a launcher from the Applications Menu, do you have this bug too?

This is really strange. Is it possible that an external program modifies some config files of the dock?

do you have a kid that would make you some prank ? :D

what if you quit the dock (from its menu) ?
does the file disappear ?
if not, what if you quit the dock, and then restart ?

Okay,

I am trying different approaches .... getting back to you soon

What really bugs me is the fact that I do not find other people complaining
about the same problem.

are you sure you don't drag the launcher out of the dock when you click on
it ? it can happen especially with a mousepad.

if you want, you can lock the icons from the right-click menu.

It has nothing to do with dragging.

I am discovering things now:

When I shutdown or restart the system through the cairo button, all
seems well
When I however shutdown or restart through the keyshortcuts (ctrl-alt-r
to restart and ctrl-alt-s to shutdown) starting sudo shutdown with the
respective parameters, icons seem to disappear.

Watch both pictures attached - the writer icon is gone

Cheers

Looking at the error messages (dmesg | tail) I see an error concerning
bumblebeed - nvidia related daemon.

Do you guys know if there are video-card problems that may cause icons
to disappear?

I don't think there is a link here.
what you can try is create the launcher, quit the dock, check the launcher
is still here, then disable the dock on startup, and restart.
if the file has gone "as usual", then the dock is cleared and another
application is deleting your files (do you have something like an
anti-virus ?)

I adjusted your test a little as follows:

After starting the desktop with cairo active I added libreoffice writer
to the dock and made sure that the icons was locked.

Than I disabled cairo-dock at startup.
I also made a copy of the launchers dir.

Than I quit cairo-dock.

The launchers were all still there.

I restarted my system (sudo shutdown -r now)
Checked the launchers - all still there

Than I started cairo-dock from the cinnamon-menu and - presto!! - the
writer icon was removed during startup of cairo-dock!!

Awaiting your further instructions.

Cheers Frank

Made more progress:

I added a launcher from the menu Libre Office Impress
I made this desktop immutable <sudo chattr -i>
Cairo startup is now logging the debug text
Did a restart of cairo
Last added launcher is not shown on the dock
the debug text shows that the icon was inserted into the main dock
BUT ... it is not shown on the dock
After quiting and restarting cairo everything is well again.

I added the debug-log to this message

Hope this helps in solving the problem

Question: Is the blacklisted video-driver a problem?

Hi all,

got closer again!!

I noticed it always happens with the last icon added.

To make sure that the icon could not be removed I changed it (chattr +i)

Quit Cairo
Take it out of the list of startup apps
restart the system
start cairo with debug and bingo!!

I added the debug log to this message.

Look for the freemind icon
You will see it complains about rights and tries to delete the desktop
file
After quitting cairo and restarting it, the freemind icon is back again

Cheers Frank

Thanks for the debug, here is the useful part I think:

debug :
(/build/buildd/cairo-dock-3.3.2/src/gldit/cairo-dock-keyfile-utilities.c:cairo_dock_open_key_file:34)
  while trying to load
/home/frank/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme/launchers/01freemind.desktop :
Permission denied
gldi_user_icon_new: assertion 'pKeyFile != NULL' failed
warning :
(/build/buildd/cairo-dock-3.3.2/src/gldit/cairo-dock-user-icon-manager.c:gldi_user_icons_new_from_directory:133)
Unable to load a valid icon from
'/home/frank/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme/launchers/01freemind.desktop';
the file is either unreadable, unvalid or does not correspond to any
installed program, and will be deleted

so, there is an invalid .desktop file in the launchers folder, and the dock
sees it and tries to remove this invalid file.
For some reason, it deletes ... the next one ! which is precisely
libreoffice-impress.desktop.

so, I think it's clear now and should be easy to fix.

thanks again for your help :-)

I spoke too fast, I can't reproduce the problem, and looking into the code,
everything seems fine :-/
can you please give the content of this invalid launcher
/home/frank/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme/launchers/01freemind.desktop ?

The dock has been stable for the past week.

Is it OK to waist just a little longer before marking this bug misteriously cured?

Cheers

Yes, thanks to the "incomplete" status, this bug will be automatically marked as invalid/expired after 60 days of inactivity ;-)

you don't have this invalid launcher anymore in
~/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme/launchers ?
it could help understanding what was the problem

You can simulate this error by inserting an eof into the file. Using vi you do ctrl-v ctrl-d (^v^d). Doing this for gcalctool I got the following:

warning : (/build/buildd/cairo-dock-3.3.99.beta1.2.really.3.3.2/src/gldit/cairo-dock-user-icon-manager.c:gldi_user_icons_new_from_directory:133)
Unable to load a valid icon from '/home/brian/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme/launchers/01gcalctool.desktop'; the file is either unreadable, unvalid or does not correspond to any installed program, and will be deleted

the file gcalctool.desktop was deleted every time I started cairo-dock after inserting the eof anywhere in the file. Is the .desktop file based on a template? Could it have been corrupted and somehow repaired or something else writing an eof?
