Thanks for investigating further Krzysztof. Just to check, when you say "the zipinfo module" do you mean zipimport? I'm curious to see your ugly hack, could you attach it here? Is it the kind of thing you could clean up and propose for upstream python? The problem is likely to be that not holding the zipfile open is actually desirable, so the workaround may not be accepted.

Having a clear answer for users that run into this problem would be a good thing regardless.
