Hmmm, more measurements:

"bzr diff -r -1" is fast (~3s, I/O bound, 93 MB RSS).

"bzr diff -r -2" is slow (~2min, CPU bound, 370 MB RSS).

I'd appreciate if you could explain what imposes this overhead.
