Justin, This seems to be a low priority bug. The debian/ubuntu issue is with the updated_needed() function in /usr/lib/byobu/updates_available. Specifically, here: https://github.com/dustinkirkland/byobu/blob/master/usr/lib/byobu/updates_available#L88
I suggest testing the next two elif blocks for Fedora and Arch Linux to see if those update needed checks need to be tweaked as well. Regards, James
