I've forked byobu on GitHub and provided a fix for Ubuntu:

Caution: This fork should not be used as an alternative to the master byobu branch. I'm not keeping it up-to-date with other commits on the master branch. This fork merely provides a solution for this particular bug under Ubuntu 16.04.

dAnjou and Justin,

I don't have the resources or the availability to test CentOS, Fedora, and Arch Linux. But are either of you available to propose a fix for the update_needed() function and test it?

If so, I will add those fixes to the fork of byobu, and hopefully they can be added to the master branch of byobu.
