Bug Description

Problem: When i click shutdown (upon logging into ubuntu 12.04) the system starts to shut down but freezes with the ubuntu logo and one or 2 dots filled. Exactly the same problem happens upon restarting. When restarting sometimes it freezes before shutting down with exactly the same symptom or restarts normally. This appears to be almost random. Does not make a difference whether i have lots of programs open when i restart or no programs open, wifi on or off it is the same.

I have not tweaked any boot up settings.

Thanks,

Do you know if this issue happened in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.4kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I've had the same problem since 11.10 . Removing fglrx driver fixed the problem for me . Could be https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/762203

Download full text (4.2 KiB)

In response to new kernel testing - i will install that one later in the
week. This is the first time that this happened - didn't happen in 11.10. I
have switched to gnome classic and the problem occurs less often. Don't
know whether it is the fglrx driver or problems with unity... Will try 3.4
kernel later on today and will see what happens

Ok i have just tried to shut down and restart 3 times (of each). It usually did it at least 50% of the time. No problems so far. I did not test the upstream kernel (should i still test it anyway?) but here is what i did:
1 pressed esc at boot so that it doesnt display the fancy boot logo.
2 swithced to gnome classic and installed synapse
3 fglrx driver still present
4-is this a unity problem then, in that case should i file a bug under unity???

Also if i dont need to test the upstream kernel what should i add in the tags area???

Thanks for everyone's help ;-)

Nope no longer an issue with 3.2.0.35 kernel and latest updates. Does not hang upon restart or shutdown.

Have also uninstalled the fglrx drivers. It is probable that this was due to the drivers as I dont experience the problem anymore
