HUD interferes with Alt+Arrow Key keyboard shortcuts

Many programs such as Nautilus, Firefox, and Google Chrome have keyboard shortcuts in the form of:

    Alt + Left
    Alt + Right
    Alt + Up
    Alt + Down

When I use these keyboard shortcuts, in addition to the expected behavior within the program I'm using, Unity's HUD is displayed. Frustratingly, the HUD steals my keyboard focus, blocking subsequent key presses from reaching the program I'm trying to use.
