Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When maximizing a window the content is "left behind". Happens often when yo do the following: start with a window not maximized -> minimize -> restore -> maximize -> repeat. Using Firefox 2.0.0.3, "Desktop Effects" and NVidia GeForce 6100. I've only seen it happen with Firefox.

It is not Firefox, it's compiz. Here is a screenshot of this error happening in Evince. The window stops responding, and gets back to normal after turning off the "desktop effects".

I have the same problem and i disagree declaring it "Low importance". It makes Compiz unusable. I have NVidia GeForce 7600GS. I plan to buy a videocard with the same chip into my other computer, because i need a cheap DUALLINK-DVI card, but this bug makes me to be at a loss. If this problem would be solved, i could use Compiz and would buy the other card. Until then i'm in trouble.

PS: I don't need to minimize the window to produce this bug, it happens on most attempt to maximize a window, or starting an application maximized (which method i prefer).

This behavior happens to me as well. Quite annoying, but I do not agree that this is a showstopper. My workaround is to Restore, then Maximize to fix the drawing error. I have to do this for each window that is restored in Maximized state. This bug relates to Gnome's restoration of maximized windows' sizes/states: bug 12956.

Some of my system info:
 [fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.37.6

Forgot to mention that this occurs particularly when restoring a session of multiple windows using: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071204 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.11

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I know that i'm not the reporter of this bug, but as i reported last December, i had the same problem. I "solved" it with a batch file which starts automatically and looks so:

sleep 10
DISPLAY=":0.0" /usr/bin/compiz --replace ccp --sm-disable --only-current-screen &
DISPLAY=":0.1" /usr/bin/compiz --replace ccp --sm-disable --only-current-screen &

It isn't a nice solving and causes another problem: in most cases i have no window decoration after it replaces compiz. I wrote the "sleep 10" line to avoid it, but it didn't really helped. So i have to start the replace command once again manually (i do it with another batch file only for my primary screen, because i use only fullscreen windows on the secondary one).
I know that it isn't a good solving, but i don't know any better yet.
I wanna use the latest UBUNTU distro, but i don't wanna lose my settings, and the upgrade procedure failed on my both attempts.

Thanks for your reply, and the additional information. Could you please try reproducing the bug on Ubuntu Hardy Heron? This is an important step for us to confirm that the issue has not already been solved. You may be able to do this from the Live CD. Thanks again!

I downloaded the Hardy Heron Live CD, burned and tried it, but it worked only in "Safe graphics mode". In normal mode X displayed (almost) nothing on my LCD and some strange flashing textmode on my CRT with vertical lines in all character shape.
"(almost) nothing" means solid black screen, or after other X starts solid color (red or purple or something else) screen with some pixel strings in the top line.
In "Safe graphics mode" i started System/Preferences/Appearance, and tried to enable Visual Effects but in both modes (Normal and Extra) got the error message "Desktop effects could not be enabled", which seems to be normal behavior in safe mode.
I know that it is offtopic, but the Hardy Heron Live CD didn't detect my sound card (AD198x integrated sound chip on ASUS P5B Deluxe motherboard).
I think, i will wait for the next UBUNTU version, and hope that it will support my hardware (that P5B Deluxe with NVidia GeForce 7600GS).
In my last report i forgot to mention, that the reason of using batch files to start Compiz was losing the desktop effects menu item after updating Compiz and installing CompizConfig.

I am using an install of Hardy Heron and still experience this bug.

Note the attachment. The displayed window is a Javascript popup in Firefox that was maximized, but the inner content window is not.

The attached screenshot came about by using Firefox:
1. Start a Firefox window, not maximized
2. Nav to: http://www.meppublishers.com/online/caribbean-beat/current_issue/index.php?pid=1000&id=cb92-2-25
3. Click on an image to pop it up in an enlargement.
The enlarged window is affected by the bug.
This behavior is not reproducible on each try for me.
But this bug does occur in Hardy Heron / 8.04.

$ uname -a
Linux machname 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:15:37 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 8.04
Acer Travelmate 4720
Desktop Effects are on, "Normal".
Gnome desktop

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
