Bug Description

Using ubuntu 11.10 and a printer hp p1102w I tried to install wireless capabilities of my printer using the last version of hplip. At the end of the installation you can run in a terminal "hp-setup". There is a choice that say:
install wireless printers with a temporary usb connection
This choice doesn't work. Following the steps, when is asked to connect the printer via usb it come a message saying that there isn't any printer on the usb port, but if you try to print via usb all works!

Hi,

WiFi configuration through USB doesnt work with this device on Linux. This is a bug with our HPLIP. And we are working on that. But if you already know the IP Address of the device, you can try the following the device using following steps.

1. Run "hp-setup <IP Address>" from the terminal.
2. Continue to configure device via WiFi.

If you dont know the IP Address of the device, following steps are work around to configure through Wifi. Download the Windows full solution driver for this device on any Windows machine.

1. Double click on the exe to extract and install.
2. Select "Configure the device through Wifi first..." and continue.
3. Select "Advanced" option to select the wireless network manually.
4. Finally print a test page. An IP address will be printed.
5. Now try to configure the device in Linux using "hp-setup <IP address>".

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks and Regards,
Srikanth Lokare

Thank you for the answer. I had previously fix using the window tool
in a virtual machine (as you suggest).
Anyway I'm waiting for THE solution :)

Best regards

I was by accident able to install able to install the printer and printed about 20 pages over a period of 2 days and then it reverted to cups backend failed.
Further; this machine has not showed up as a cd rom but as (an HP device Bus002dev:004); When I checked just now it does no appear at all. This may have happened since I was able to install the printer wirelessly to another laptop and print OKfor one day only. It was not found this morning.
However this comes now from the usb connected machine; since the failure of the wireless connection. Indicating the printer as Bus 002 Dev 005.as you can see it does not show as a CDROM( never has). There has been some talk in forums of someone using Modeswitch? to manipulate the state of CDROM to something elseand I see that (usb_modeswitch, usb_modeswitch_dispatcher) was installed here by default. I didn't have the skill to try using it

As it remains both methods of printer are non-usable for me.
Thanks for your interest.
I will be happy to try more and post if requested. I'll see if I can find the discussion about modeswitch for you.
