Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

No problem, however to make any progress with your sound issue I really need you to follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Also please run the command... 'apport-collect -p alsa-base' 989392 ...in the terminal as the output will be required to begin addressing the issue you have reported.

Thanks in advance,
James

@James, the issue is understandable, and it's probably an issue with pulseaudio. The most helpful thing would probably be a verbose pulse log: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log

affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) → pulseaudio (Ubuntu)
summary: - Volumen in 12.04 lts
+ Volume in 12.04 lts either nearly inaudible or very loud

Ok, thank you Dave. I will direct the OP in that direction while trying to get more information about the issue.

If you could also follow the directions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log to generate a verbose pulseaudio log as Dave suggested it would be appreciated.

Hi
I have the same issue and I think you don't need logs or anything you just need a better understandig.
It's not a bug you can see in logs or whatever. I tested it with alsamixer in a terminal. If you klick on the Sound applet and turn the mousewheel to adjust the volumen in alsa mixer master and pcm are regulated. and there is a part where master is regulated in one turn from 100 to 0 and then only pcm is regulated a litle bit.
If I adjust the sound with the alsamixer everything is perfect. If i adjust it with the applet it is not adjustable. You can't move the curser that litle.
So the bug is in the Volumemanagement.
If you have any idea how I can find a log where you can find that "bug" please tell me but I think there is no buglog because it doesn't cause errors I guess.

greets

btw I upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 LTS on March 1st.
This install was upgraded from 10.10 to 12.04 every 6 months.
