Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

While trying to enable the desktop effects with a legacy nvidia card I get an error saying that the effects could not be enabled.
I'm using a legacy nvidia card and restricted-manager reports that the card is enabled.

Running from the command line, i got this output:

* BEGIN OF OUTPUT *

gtk-window-decorator: Could not acquire decoration manager selection on screen 0 display ":0.0"
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
/usr/bin/compiz.real: Root visual is not a GL visual
/usr/bin/compiz.real: Failed to manage screen: 0

Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding "toggle_shaded"
Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding "toggle_shaded"
* END OF OUTPUT *

I don't know why GLX is missing, i'll try to work on that.

Can you please describe the exact error message you saw at 'saying that the effects could not be enabled'? A screenshot perhaps?

The output in comment 1 is from desktop-effects, I presume?

Changed in restricted-manager:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Here is the screenshot and yes, the output is what desktop-effects outputs when ran from the command line and I have Load "glx" in my xorg.conf that's why I don't understand why this is not working.

The nividia-legacy driver doesn't support desktop-effects, so that is the expected behavior.
If you have one of the cards which support has been dropped on the latest update, you can install the driver 9631, (which will be in Feisty), as you can see in Bug #96430.

Martin, maybe the message can be more explicit, and if the driver is the nvidia-legacy, say that driver doesn't support the effects. And if the 9631 driver is finally shipped in Feisty, allow the user to install it, if his card is supported by that driver.

This looks like a dup of Bug #98502 .

The GLX is missing business sounds like Bug #91064 , Bug #84574 ...

Were you able to resolve the lack of GLX by using a newer restricted-manager to disable/enable the nvidia binary driver?

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been using the computer where I
couldn't enable the driver.
It still doesn't work with the legacy driver, I can't enable the
desktop effects.

If you sent the lspci output as an email attachment then it didn't make it to launchpad (email attachments are always disregarded). See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/desktop-effects/+bug/98576 to see what I mean...

You're in luck. Your GeForce2 MX isn't legacy-legacy, merely only legacy. It will be possible to use the nvidia-glx drivers (which are the 96xx series and the last release that still supported your card - see http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-a.html ) instead of the nvidia-glx-legacy. If you stay with nvidia-glx-legacy then you will never be able able to activate desktop effects without the aid of XGL...

What happens if you switch to nvidia-glx ?
