Bug Description

1. Installed 10.04.4 Ubuntu with Wubi
2. Did all 10.04 updates
3. Upgraded by running "update-manager -d"
During the upgrade there were a number of errors. There were some popus with out any text (just empty boxes for each character in the message and the buttons). The upgrade reported issues with the initrd.img and a number of other things.

Upon reboot - the install hung. I removed `quiet splash vt.handoff=7' and booted okay. The hang appears to have been a once off as on reboot it worked fine.

It booted into Ubuntu 12.04 (I'm typing this report from there) so in some sense it is successful.
Please find attached the logs and some pics.

Some of the errors I got during the upgrade 'self-reported' and are recorded as bug 984598 (memtest86+), bug 984599 (linux-image-3.2.0-23) and bug 984601 (friendly-recovery).

There was also bug 984602 (initctl crashed with SIGABRT) which appeared after the upgrade.
