Bug Description

Touchpad scrolling doesn't work occasionally with Nautilus.
I can scroll up-down just on the right side, but not in the center of the page or in other points.
In the same time it works normally in Firefox.
I'm not able to reproduce this bug. However I have noticed it just in these two last days.

I don't know which update caused it, but I noticed this last week too. I can scroll normally with Firefox, but touchpad scrolling in any GTK app only works when moving the cursor to be on top of the scrollbar, which is quite a bit of a usability regression for touchpad users, especially at this point in the cycle.

I confirm. Not only with Nautilus. Other app affected: System monitor

Seems to have started with this patch -> 203_fix_coasting_speed.patch. It happens quite often and is fixed by logging off / on. This is quite a usability bug as a touchpad is my only means of navigation on my laptop as I do not use an external mouse.

I can confirm what James says above. Versions up through ubuntu4 work fine, but the latest version (ubuntu5) produces the behavior described in the bug and the comments. There is a noticeable difference in the coasting speed between the two versions, which suggests that this patch may be the culprit, as it's an obvious change from ubuntu4.

Moving to Nautilus as it looks to be app-specific.

It's not application specific as it is easily reproducible on gnome-system-monitor with a few up and down scrolls with the touchpad,

Yes. It happens not only with Nautilus. The same happens with gnome-system-monitor.
In these last days occurs more often, I think.

I can confirm this bug.

It not only affects Nautilus, but System Settings and Empathy messenger as well.

IMHO this should be High Priority, not low.

I am also affected by this bug. It seems that any window with the system scroll bars is affected. Other windows (e.g. Chrome, Adobe Reader, OpenOffice) are not affected.

Hardware: Lenovo IdeaPad Y550, synaptics touchpad

I too can confirm that it not only affects Nautilus, but System Settings also. When the cursor hovers over the overlay scroll bar the touch pad scrolling functions properly. It does not work in the middle of the page however. It is frequent.

im having a similar (but possibly unrelated) problem. im using ubuntu 12.04 and my touchpad works beautifully in firefox and chrome but in nautilus the vert and horiz scrolling is wayyy too fast. it seems somehow nautilus is getting touchpad settings from somewhere else other than synclient or xorg.conf. does anyone know which scrolling speed in nautilus is different to firefox and other apps?

palimmo, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-synaptics REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
