Hi Gifford, upstream thinks this may be fixed already in the mainline kernel, by commit c501ae7f332cdaf42e31af30b72b4b66cbbb1604 which is included in v3.4-rc1.

Deb packages of the mainline kernels are available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/.

I would suggest waiting until the freeze occurs one or two more times, so you get a feel for how frequently it occurs, and if there are any things that seem to trigger it.

Then, install v3.4-rc1-precise (or newer), and try to do those same things (or wait the appropriate period of time), and see if the freeze occurs again.

In either case, report back here with your findings.

Btw, if it does lockup again with the newer kernel, you need to collect the output of 'dmesg' and your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file. Both of these must be collected while the machine is locked up (e.g. by sshing into the sick machine over ethernet). See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for additional info.

I'm impressed with a response and encouraged with the exception of my, likely, inability to understand all the suggested fixes and how they are to be applied. My "ace-in-the-hole" is that I teach non-technical subjects at a computer-based technical college and have a classroom full of students that just love challenges and would be glad to help the instructor.

I'll keep any errors coming and look forward to the "bonding" with my students and their admiration to my embracing open-source.

I have the same issues (get the same error code) but only when trying to launch SuperTuxKart 3D game.

I can play video and have been able to sucesfully play some other old Windows 3d games via Wine without a problem.

The same happens also if I use Lubutnu so it's not a unity/compiz related issue.
