Bug Description

Did clean install from 12.04 beta CD image (downloaded 5th April from the UK mirror). All OK except no home directory for initial user was created.

As a result could not log in to graphical shell until a home directory had been created.

/home was configured for it's own partition. I don't know if that was a factor.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/974402/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. While we appreciate the difficulties you are facing, it would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you download. Could you please visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM follow the instructions and report back as to whether or not the MD5SUM verified? Thanks in advance.

This is the MD 5 of the downloaded file.

MD5 (ubuntu-12.04-beta2-desktop-amd64.iso) = 5461e64e9943cecfd4b6eab6eab05bbd

One extra comment is that I selected BTRFS for all the partitions. Don't know if it is related. I am getting an error message on boot about sparse files that seems to be a long standing Grub bug that is only wish list status.

Download source was uk2.net mirror but the MD5 above looks OK to me.

/var/installer/syslog seems to claim that a user directory was created although it didn't seem to be when the system booted. Finding this I also note the failure to change mode of /etc/passwd to 600. When I checked after finding this it was world readable which I believe is a security issue.

I've found in the docs that for installer issues the ubiquity package should be set.

The bug was set to invalid when it was suggested that it was a bad CD image but the MD5 checks out and I have added more information.

Please note that this bug did not cause me a significant issue and will probably cause me no further problem but particularly new users could be put off if they hit this (if it is a wider issue than just me and a freak occurrence). I'm not too bothered if you fix it but consider this report a very small contribution to your project.

Based on the other similar report which I have marked as duplicate the combination of Btrfs and a separate /home partition are the common features.

I hit the same bug with the similar settings as the descrpition but from the 12.04 release version. Noticed when login attempts from lightdm puzzlingly looped back to the login screen without any error message.
