Bug Description

Sorry for filing it with "ubiquity", but the bug is linked to the install process of the beta version of Precise Pangolin, and I had to choose a package for Apport.

Steps:
1 downloaded live CD from http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ by April 2nd,
2 boot with live CD
3 ubuntu loading page appears, dots moving
4 funny welcome page appears: parts of my standard Lucid Lynx desktop, strangely shifted across the wallpaper. Let's say, the upper left quarter at the lower right, etc. system goes on working for a while, then freezes. no input, even not the REISUB sequence. why does the live CD install take info from my harddisk???
5 switch off power, new boot, I repeat steps 2 + 3
6 very colourful screen with many pixels, as if taking a random bitmap and displaying by the graphic card. comp seems to work for some seconds (CD player active), no input accepted
7 the same like steps 5 + 6

I see no chance to intervene, i.e. to make a mistake.

Where can I find logs to post? Those in the /var/log/installer are very old. Can I stop the process?

No hurry, I'm safely and happily working on Ubuntu 10.04 and open for testing.

Peter Wagner

Just a low quality (sorry) picture (screenshot is not possible of course) from my forth boot from the install CD.

You can see different segment of my Lucid-desktop. It is probably the last screen before the switch-off before the trial of the install CD, because you can see the lower part of the switch-off window on the right up section. And possibly it is just the content of the graphic card, so Precise finally doesn't take this information from the Lucid partition on the hard disk.

Inbetween I have tried the alternate CD, also beta, downloaded 4/15. Install ran without disruption. Previous OS get started without trouble.

First start (and any further) of Precise began with a blank violet screen (for a second), followed by an introduction screen (20 secs?), with four horizontal bars in violet-black-violet-black, separated by tiny dotted coloured lines, which slightly move (seemingly a reminder of the moving dots of the welcome-screen). Then a completely black screen without any sign of life. CTRL+ALT+PrtScrn+REISUB shuts the system down.

In recovery mode, the system boots correctly and enables a glimpse into Ubiquity. I updated everything, but a full start rendered the symptoms described above.

I enter some logs which may help with finding the problem. Can add any more, of course.

Two months ago I had also problems with install, then of the 11.10 version, and to a completely different computer for a friend, but with the same monitor. It has seemed to me a problem of the intel video card, which didn't cope with my new monitor BENQ GL 2240, and after a reduction of the screen size, the system worked fine, without these strange effects (stripes across the screen, disappearing letters etc.). With my friend, my installation works without problems, with another monitor.

Regarding the fact that I do have a NVidia GeForce GT240, the symptomatics desribed above might be linked to a misfunction reported in bug # 763052. It seems that I can work in recovery mode due to the nouveau VESA driver, which was there without my involvement (as recommended in the second bug, so no need to install xserver-
xorg-video-nouveau).
After a recommendation I have tried to install the restricted NVidia driver, but without success (see the attached jockey log file).

Now I can positively confirm, that the problem was given by a Nouveau driver. According to the receipt in bug # 763052 (#19), I removed the Nouveau driver, restarted for sure, allowed the Nvidia propriety driver (to run Ubiquity in 3D), and everything is going fine now.

Anyway, the bug still persisted until yesterday, and if there is some priority to make the Nouveau driver run with this card, I would be really happy to help as a testing case. Don't hesitate to contact me on o.petris$volny.cz (with some patience, it takes sometimes some days for me to check mails.

That version is no more supported; and no expecting backport as it only concern 'security' problem.
