this is most likely a bug in scummvm, not in beneath-a-steel-sky; the bass package just contains game data.

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat. Regarding Lucid, I played this game about halfway through did not have it crash.
