Bug Description

I have has all sorts of problems printing a PDF file, but none with LibreOffice or other text documents. I opened CUPS in a browser and this message was returned:

SpliX Cannot open CMS file /usr/share/cups/profiles/samsung/CLP-500cms (2)"

I haven't had any prior issues with my Samsung CLP-500 going back to Hardy Heron. One of the PDF files I could not print was created by LibreOffice, but it printed immediately from the source ODT.

Can you please follow the instructions of the sections "CUPS error_log" and "Capturing print job data" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems for a failing job?

Can you also try a live CD of Precise (12.04 beta1), do all system updates in the live session, and then try whether you can print these jobs from there? Thanks.

I've been alpha testing since Hardy days, and was able to print a pdf on my Precise partition. I opened localhost:631 in Oneric and am attaching the error log.

More info - If I log out and back in after each printing job, I can print a PDF. Both printers disappear after a job.

In addition to my CLP-500 I have an HP OfficeJet 4500 which hasn't caused me any problems, but as ink is far more expensive than toner, it isn't meant to be a workhorse.

Please also do the test with the live CD of Ubuntu 12.04 beta1, so that we can see whether the bug still persists in our latest version.

I've been through all that. What's happening now is that the first job prints properly, but when I try to print another job there are no printers listed in the printing dialogue, except 'print to file'. As I mentioned, I have two printers, one being fax capable and all are displayed on the first job.

Waiting several minutes or logging out and in restores the printers, but obviously that isn't acceptable on a stable environment.

Can you please set CUPS into debug mode (as described under "CUPS error_log" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, log out and log in again, cancel all stuck print jobs, then print your PDF file, and after it comes out, print a PDF file again (will fail), wait some minutes and then attach the error_log to this bug report (follow the instructions under "CUPS error_log" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems). Attach also /var/log/syslog. Do not compress or package these files, attach them one by one. Thanks.

Do the printers also disappear after sending a job to the HP?

Right after logging in, can ypu run the " top" command in a terminal window and keep it running. Then print a job and see in the terminal window whether there is "cupsd" and/or processes owned by "lp" under the ones with highest memory consumption. Please tell which processes these are, how much CPU and memory they consume (copy and paste the "top" output) and see whether they go away after some time and whether from then on your printers are visible again.

To answer #8 first I received the attached screenshot after printing to the HP, and just now have the message 'there are no printers configured yet'.

I have a client coming in shortly but will try #11 after I'm done. In the meantime, it takes about 3 minutes for the process to reset itself and the printers become visible again, unless of course I log out and in again before that.

Hmm - I noticed that desktopcouch-se started to comsume resources the went 'zombie' after a test print. Could I somehow have my printing connected to UbuntuOne?

I didn't see any CPU or memory stress. Here's the output of 'top'. It was fluctuating, of course, but I didn't see any reference to cups or ip while trying to open the print dialogue again.

I'm wondering if this is actually system-config-printer-gnome that's the issue, as it affects anything I try to print.

My HP OfficeJet printer is also a scanner and fax machine, and are disabled as well for a few minutes after a print job.

Curiouser and curiouser - just the act of opening and closing the print dialogue disables printing, scanning and faxing for a few minutes.

I reinstalled cups and it didn't help, but after reinstalling system-config-printer-gnome and associated files I was able to print two jobs with no delays.

The reinstalling of system-config-printer-gnome has definitely solved my problem. There are other similar bugs where this might be the solution as well.
