As a workaround, I have run the following commands:
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/ apt/archives/ vlc-nox_ 2.0.1-2_ i386.deb
sudo apt-get -f install
vlc seems to be working ok now - but I am not sure what state ubuntu is in as a result of this override.
