Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Does this happen when you log out of a Gnome or a KDE session? Thanks in advance.

i'm having the same problem. i just need to start my pc, log in, and then close the session. the screen will go blank, and ctrl-alt-del or anything like that won't work. I have to restart the pc to be able to log in again.
But I'm using a Radeon XPress 1100 with the proprietary driver.
TIA,
Khristian

Same problem here. I'm using nvidia-glx driver on Feisty. The steps that produce the issue for me are:

1.- Log in as user A
2.- Press 'Switch User'
3.- Log in as user B. At this point, both sessions, A and B are active
4.- Close session B

Then the screen goes blank. I can't close a session if there's another session active

Can you test whether this problem happens when you use the open source nv driver? You will need for the Driver section to say "nv" under the Section "Device" part of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and for X to be restarted before you will be running the open source nv driver.

Well, after a couple of tests I found that the problem, at least in mi case, has to do with Beryl and
not with GDM. If I repeat the steps posted above (see my previous post) using Beryl as the window
manager, what happens is that the screen asking for the password to unlock the active session of
user A goes blank. But even though the screen is blank I can type my password, press enter and
return to the opened session. If I do the steps using Metacity, I have no problems at all.

My section for the video drive of my xorg.conf is

Section "Device"
    Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    VideoRam 128000
    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
EndSection

And I'm using Metacity

You are currently using the NVIDIA binary driver and we need you to report the what result you get open source nv driver at least once so that this bug can be filed in the right place. Can you temporarily change
Driver "nvidia"
to
Driver "nv"
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then reboot and retest the problem? When you are done change it back to nvidia to start using the binary driver again.

I have similar bug with Ubuntu 7.04 + driver "ati" or "fglrx"

Step to reproduce error:
1- Login user "A"
2- change to user "B" (both session are open "A" & "B")
3- User B use PC more than 1 min.
4- Click logout button or change user botton "system hang"

Hang with driver "Ati" or "fglrx" the only diference is:

With driver "ati" all system hang and screen freeze
with driver "fglrx" all system hang and the screen goes black

I suspect your issue is different. Try searching for a similar issue but relating to ati/fglrx . If nothing turns up please file a new bug report...

I changed the driver on xorg.conf, and the nv driver(instead nvidia) don't
have any problem, don't appears black screen wen close a sesion or changing
the user. So I believe that the problem is in the binary driver.

I have the same problem with : Vidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300]
Like Felipe Sampaio I change the driver in xorg.conf to nv instead of nvidia and it solve the problem but it disable automaticaly the desktop effects. Then I change again to nvidia and disable manually desktop effects. It works too. So this bug appears on my computer only when enabling desktop effects using nvidia proprietary driver.
Hope it helps.

I tested here , and the results is like Simon( I'm using the nv driver). I
think that the problem is in the desktop efects. Wen it disabled using the
nv driver, I changing the user or closing a session works. But wen I enabled
the desktop effects using the nv driver the same problem appears.

Simon:
Your issue is almost certainly Bug #96240 . You may want to try the workaround listed there.

Felipe:
Desktop-effects does not work with the open source nv driver (I would imagine trying to enable it would send your screen white or black). Remember you need to restart X (or better yet reboot) when switching from one to the other. If your 3D is fast and you're using an NVIDIA card then the odds are you are not using the open source nv driver.

Simon/Felipe:
Does following the steps mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/96240/comments/28 make any difference?

You're right about the desktop effects, it's don't work with nv driver. and
about the link that you recommended, don't works here. This message appears
on terminal:

felipe@felipe:~$ gconftool -s
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/sync_to_vblank-t boolean false
A type must be specified when attributing a value

There needs to be a space between -t and vblank . My bad....

Can you also indicate whether the problem goes way if you temporarily disable desktop effects?
