Norwegian messages are actually Danish

During installation of the latest Ubuntu release, I chose "Norwegian" as locale,
but when Ubuntu had finished installing all menus appeared in Danish.

Installed Warty on my p3 at home, chose Norwegian [Bokmal] as language during
install. When Ubuntu had finished installing, all menus and dialogboxes in
Synaptic appeared in Danish. Danish and Norwegian are two very different
languages, so it was a bit frustrating. Had to reinstall, this time with English
language. Noticed that this bug also complies with the PPC-version, since I
installed Ubuntu on my iMac at the office. Also installed the prerelease
candidate of Ubuntu at work on a dual xeon prior to all this, with Norwegian as
my language, but then it worked perfectly - so something happened before the
release of Warty (perhaps a confusion when you chose the Norwegian keyboard layout).

Other than that, I'm happy with my Ubuntu's.

Is synaptic the only package that is displayed with the wrong locales? What is
the output of
"locales" on your system?

Note that you can install additional language support when you select the
package "locales" in synaptic and then click on "Package/Configure" (you may
have to install "libgnome2-perl" first). The additional languages are displayed
at the next login.

I really have no idea what caused this problem. The gettext language codes look
like this:
da: danish
nb,no: norwegian

I just generated no_NO.UTF-8 locales and started synaptic using this locales. It
look norwegian to me (at least "cancel" is translated the same as in gedit). I
haven't tested it on a warty system though.

Had the ~same problem here after installing a barebone warty and updating to hoary.
"sv" and "da" seemed to be in the LANGUAGES env, and this, along with a
locate-related bug in xorg (according to daniels) was what caused the problems.
Why are those strings put in the languages variable when only selecting
norwegian on install? Removed those strings from my config, and mostly
everything (the console always did) shows in norwegian bokmål. Using nb_NO.UTF-8
as my only installed locale. Xchat still has a weird mix of norwegian and
SWEDISH, though ;-) - I guess that's another problem when transiting to UTF8.

The debian-installer set the LANGUAGES variable. They put "dv" and "sa" into it
intentional. There rational seems to be that it's better to have a translation
into a close language like "dv" or "sa" than no translation at all. I can't
really comment on this issue as I don't speak any of those three languages :)

If you feel this is wrong, please open a bug against debian-installer.
