Thunderbird fails to initialise properly and reports exception

When starting Thunderbird, I end up with a window that is only partially drawn (see attached screenshot) and completely un-responsive. When starting from the command line, I get the following output:

Note that this issue only started appearing after the package updates done on 16 Feb 2012.
